'Taking the Pee' is a motion graphic designed to introduce the UTS community and wider public to a 2-year pilot study run by the Institute for Sustainable Futures over 2010-2011.

The innovative trial, trans-disciplinary in nature, aims to collect, treat and re-use urine in agricultural trials via the use of urine diversion (UD) toilets at the university. The motion graphic also introduces another strand dominating the research agenda: a predicted global deficit mined phosphate, a resource needed by all living matter. Human urine is a potential source of phosphorus and the animation asks its audience to donate their 'precious pee', as well as re-considering their waste as a resource.

UWS design students then became involved in solving the design challenge: to convince patrons of the need to implement this strategy and consequently to induce men to sit down to urinate so as to effectively achieve the urine diversion goal. Related issues were also addressed, such as the cleaning and use procedures required to avoid contamination of the end product.
